Taxonomic notes and critical discussion on the status of Hydnum notarisii (Basidiomycota) through the evaluation of Giuseppe Inzenga's original study…

2016

The current taxonomic status of Hydnum notarisii Inzenga is here critically analyzed on the basis of Giuseppe Inzenga’s original description and of the specimens kept in his private herbarium hosted in the Istituto Agrario Castelnuovo (Palermo, Italy) and in the Herbarium of Museum of Evolution, Uppsala University, Sweden (UPS). The detailed morphological study of the original dried material through the use of compound optical and scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that this particular fungus possesses very similar features with Hericium erinaceus (Bull.) Pers.

Medicinal Mushrooms: Bioactive Compounds, Use, and Clinical Trials

2021

Medicinal mushrooms have important health benefits and exhibit a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities, including antiallergic, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antiviral, cytotoxic, immunomodulating, antidepressive, antihyperlipidemic, antidiabetic, digestive, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, nephroprotective, osteoprotective, and hypotensive activities. The growing interest in mycotherapy requires a strong commitment from the scientific community to expand clinical trials and to propose supplements of safe origin and genetic purity. Bioactive compounds of selected medicinal mushrooms and their effects and mechanisms in in vitro and in vivo clinical stu…

Comparative chemical composition, free radical-scavenging and cytotoxic properties of essential oils of six Stachys species from different regions of…

2009

Abstract The chemical composition of essential oils of six Stachys species, S. cretica L. ssp. vacillans Rech. fil., S. germanica L., S. hydrophila Boiss., S. nivea Labill., S. palustris L. and S. spinosa L., obtained by hydrodistillation, was studied by GC and GC–MS. All the oils have in common a great percentage of fatty acids and esters (24.2–58.5%) and a high amount of sesquiterpenes (16–35.9%), with the exception of the oil from S. palustris , which consisted mainly of carbonylic compounds (25.4%). The antioxidant activity by DPPH test and the antiproliferative activity on a series of human cancer cell lines (C32, amelanotic melanoma and ACHN, renal cell adenocarcinoma) were investigat…

Note citotassonomiche sul genere Thapsia L. (Apiaceae)

2008

This study aims to clarify the taxonomic states and relations within the genus Thapsia from the Mediterranean area, with particular interest to the populations growing in Sicily. The results of morphological and karyological investigations on living plants, combined with herbarium surveys and literature data, allowed us to define an updated taxonomic profile of the genus Thapsia, with the description of a new species from the island of Lampedusa (SW Sicily), named T. pelagica. Moreover a new taxonomic combination is proposed for the populations of Peloritani Mts. (NE Sicily), which are here treated as subspecies messanensis of T. garganica.

Morphological, karyological and taxonomic remarks on Ferulago nodosa (L.) Boiss. (Apiaceae)

2012

Abstract Western (Sicilian) and eastern (Balcan-aegean) populations of the Balcan-tyrrhenian Ferulago nodosa are reported to be different in some morphological characters, and were considered different species by some authors in XIX century. In this work, fruit and pollen morphologies have been compared in Sicilian and Cretan plants; also, the chromosome number of Sicilian plants has been ascertained. Preliminary results highlight a general homogeneity between the two populations, nevertheless showing significant differences in some parameters (fruit form, pollen size). For this reason, and considering the geographic disjunction of the Sicilian plants, the two populations are proposed to be…

THE MEANING OF ENDEMISM IN PHYTOGEOGRAPHY

2013

The definition of endemism is a relative concept, and is relative to the size of the territory and the hierarchical rank of the taxon one is referring to. The more the territory is small, less you would expect to find in it the whole areal of taxa which ranks are high as a family or an order. Here is the case to cite FAVARGER (1969): "It is the scale that creates the phenomenon." The criterion for the definition of endemism is therefore the exclusive membership to a certain geographical territory taken as a reference, not the size of the range of taxon.

Diversity in the genus Hieracium Linnaeus s.str. (Asteraceae) in Sicily

2015

The present taxonomic and floristic knowledges on Hieracium L. s. str. in Sicily are commented. In total, 11 taxa occur in this island, 10 of which are endemic and 1 has a wider range. For each of these taxa, biological form, phenology, distribution, ecology, chromosome number, conservation, and taxonomy are taken in consideration. A key to the taxa is also provided.
